Roger’s political life was never about title or office, but about substance, the work behind the scenes, where counsel is offered, judgement respected, and wisdom is relied upon.
That Gerry Brownlee chose to acknowledge Roger by name, in his first speech as Speaker of the House, was no small gesture.
It means Roger’s name now sits permanently in Hansard, the official record of Parliament.
For someone who engaged so closely with the political life of this country and cared about its direction,
the recognition was both fitting and profoundly meaningful.
